If you have your career figured out then ignore this message...

Dear Psychology Students,

Welcome to midterm! You're working so hard. Keep it up. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

I've been focusing quite a bit in these messages on careers for psychology majors and minors. It's important because you're learning so many amazing skills and developing new knowledge and you might want to know what you can do with it all.

In psychology, it's particular challenging, because unlike a nursing degree where you become a nurse or a teaching degree where you become a teacher, there is not necessarily a straight path to one specific career from psychology. That's the joy and difficulty. The psychology degree leads to so many different careers.

One of my favorite psychology colleagues who teaches at Boise State has written a great article about this very situation here. Dr. Landrum outlines what you can do with a psychology degree. Please read!

At the same time I read about trends in the career market. One of those is in technology. Of course tech is huge and there are great careers there. Yet, tech is looking for people with particular skill sets. They are really looking for folks with backgrounds in psychology because we understand human behavior and human mental processes. As we move forward with tech it will be critical to understand how technology, games, privacy, etc. interact with human behavior and mental processes.

Here's an idea: strengthen all your skills and knowledge in psychology AND consider a minor in communication design or computer science here at CSUMB. Minors are typically 3-4 classes. You will be preparing yourself to be in a competitive position for those awesome jobs in tech. Talk to a faculty member, your PSY advisor Chrissy, and the Career Center (next to Chrissy's office) for help in mapping this road.

And don't hesitate to email me with any questions or comments,
Dr. Dyer
